BillOwl ("the App") is a travel bill tracking application with AI-powered invoice recognition. The App is operated by Daichen Chai, an individual developer, who is the data controller. We take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how the App and its backend service collect, use, and protect your information. BillOwl operates a backend service, hosted in the United States, that stores your account and travel expense data so it is available across your sessions and devices. All data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS.
On our servers we store:
If you sign in with Apple and use "Hide My Email," the private relay address is not stored as your identity.
You sign in with Google or Apple using OAuth / OpenID Connect. We receive a stable user identifier and an email address from your chosen provider in order to create and access your account.
You do not provide your own AI API keys. AI features are powered by our backend using our own credentials.

AI is the core of BillOwl. Our backend service uses third-party AI providers to power bill recognition and timeline image generation. We call these providers with our own API credentials — you do not provide your own keys.
When you use an AI feature, your input is first screened by OpenAI's moderation API for safety. If it passes, the relevant data is sent to Google's Gemini API for processing. These requests are made by our backend using our own credentials.
Bill Recognition: The typed text or receipt photo you submit, plus the relevant bill data, is sent to Google Gemini to extract merchant name, date, amount, currency, category, line items, and notes.
Timeline Generation (Minds): When you generate a Minds timeline image, your trip data — journal name, currency, and a bill timeline summary (merchant names, dates, amounts, and categories) — is sent to Google Gemini along with a prompt requesting an artistic infographic.
Moderation: Each user input is sent to OpenAI's moderation API to screen it for safety before it reaches Gemini.
Each AI provider processes your data according to its own privacy policy (linked above). We recommend reviewing those policies. We use these providers only to deliver the App's features.

We use your data only to provide the App — to capture, organize, analyze, and generate insights about your travel expenses. We do not sell your data, show ads, or use it for cross-app tracking or advertising.

Bill amounts, categories, and other financial information you enter are stored on our backend service so they are available across your devices. The App does not connect to any bank, payment processor, or financial institution, and we never access your bank or payment accounts.

The App is not specifically directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
